You went to bed like any other night and were asleep in minutes. But, when you woke, you weren’t at home. You were in a car (that wasn’t yours), wearing clothes (that weren’t yours), and holding a bag of money (that wasn’t yours). Suddenly, a police car turned on its lights to pull you over. What did you do?
“You’re just a charmer, aren’t you?”
The sound of squealing tires woke me up, but not in time to stop my forehead from making contact with the window. The car straightened out and I straightened up, but there were flashing blue lights in my vision. I gave it a couple of moments to try and blink them away, but they weren’t going anywhere. And that’s when I realized that I was awake.
“I see you’re finally awake.”
“Who are you?”
In the driver’s seat beside me is a girl that I don’t remember. Dark glossy hair surrounds a face with porcelain skin and perfect ruby red lips. The eyes that look at me are hazel as she responds with a carefree laugh and speeds up the car.
“You’re quite the joker, aren’t you, Peter?”
I’m stunned for a minute. She knew my name. How could she know my name, but I have no recollection of who she is? There was no way that I would forget meeting someone who looked the way she did. I tried to sit up and turn to get a better look at her, only to find that something was resting in my lap that prevented me completely moving. Pushing it on the ground revealed that the burlap sack was filled with a treasure chest of things— money, jewels, even a crown. I had never seen so much in my life, and I couldn’t help myself as I reached to make sure it was real. Then I stopped, because the gray sleeve wrapped around my wrist didn’t belong to me.
“What on earth is going on? Who are you? Why do I have a bag full of jewels? Why the hell am I wearing a monkey suit? Did you make me rob a bank?”
The driver’s smile disappeared as she took a second look at me and realized that I honestly didn’t know the answers. “What do you mean? Those are my things. It was your idea to take them. Don’t you remember? You wanted to run away together.”
